Cultural Relics of the "Zhongshan Gunboat"
24.1.2003 – 21.4.2003
Upper Gallery
"Zhongshan" gunboat, which was originally called "Yong Feng", was renamed in memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. From 1913 to 1938 during the period between its sailing back from Japan upon completion and its being shot down by the Japanese fighters, "Zhongshan" gunboat witnessed the history of Republican China, including Sun's movement to protect Constitution, the rise of Chiang Kai-shek, the split of the Nationalist Party, and the War of Resistance against Japan. In 1997, thanks to the painstaking effort of the specialists in Hubei Province, the "Zhongshan" gunboat was salvaged from the bottom of the Changjiang River. With the display of some 80 artefacts on loan from Wuhan, we hope that our audience can have a better understanding of the scale and unique features of this historic gunboat, as well as its vicissitudes in the modern Chinese history.
